  • Dry Hair Does Not Mean You Need a Protein Treatment

I think it's time we stop the narrative that a protein treatment will always save the day. That's not necessarily true. In fact, a protein treatment could be the cause of your hair's demise. Instead of heading straight for the protein, we need to start at the source. What is truly going on with your hair? How has it been acting, and what have you been doing to it leading up to this moment. Whether we like it or not our actions play a huge part in the health of our hair. So let's dive in Your hair could be dry for a number of reasons. 1.) Your hair has protein overload. Protein overload is a very serious, tricky, and sneaky condition. It will pop up on you out of the blue. The signs are very similar to hair that you would think needs a protein treatment. Protein overload is caused by using too many products that have protein in them and the excess protein causes your hair to become dry, stiff, and brittle. Solution: Check the ingredients on the back of your products to see if they have protein, and how much. The ingredients on the back of the products are listed in order of concentration. That means the first ingredient makes up most of the product and the last ingredient makes up a small part of the product. I am not saying that you shouldn't use a protein-heavy shampoo ever, but you should use it when necessary. 2.) Your scalp is dry. When your scalp lacks oil, there is no oil available to slide down your hair shafts and lubricate the hair. This is why oiling your scalp is important. Solution: Oil your scalp every 2-3 days with oils that contain jojoba oil. Jojoba oil matches the skin's sebum(the natural oil that the skin and scalp produces) 3.) Your hair cuticles are damaged. Your hair cuticles can become damaged from straightening your hair too often and using harsh chemicals like relaxers, perms, and dyes. Solution: Limit how often you use heat on your hair, and be mindful of the chemicals you are using on your hair. Also, trim off damaged ends. It helps the hair become smooth and less rough. 4.) You’re washing your hair too often. If you are washing your hair multiple times within 7 days. You're much washing it too much. Because your hair does not create oil on its own, it is already at risk of becoming dry. Constant washing can strip the hair strands of any oil that is present and cause the hair to become brittle and break off. Solution: Don't wash your hair multiple times within 7 days. 5.) Your shampoo is too harsh. The shampoo that you’re using at the moment is probably too harsh. Shampoos have different properties and should be used when your hair needs certain things. For example, a shampoo that is heavy in protein should be used when your hair is protein deficient. Using a protein shampoo(too much) when your hair isn’t deficient, could be a reason why your hair is dry because it is causing protein overload. Solution: Alternate your shampoo based on the needs of your hair. If it is dry, use a moisturizing shampoo. If it is damaged, use a protein shampoo. If you have severe dandruff, use a shampoo that helps with dandruff. If you have buildup, use a clarifying shampoo. Based upon which reason applies to you and your hair specifically, you should act accordingly.

  • How to Achieve Healthy Hair: Hair Porosity

The Hair Porosity Guide Here at SuesyCoilsCare, we talk a lot about hair porosity. I know some of you are wondering- what the heck is it? Well, wonder no more. I got you! What is Hair Porosity? Hair porosity explains how your hair cuticles behave. Are they close together? Are they more spaced out? It also tells you how well your hair will retain moisture or absorb moisture. There are three types, low, medium, and high. Hair Porosity teaches you how to manipulate your hair. Ways Hair Porosity Teaches You How to Manipulate Your Hair Hair Porosity: Tells if you should wash your hair with warm water vs. cold water It even helps you decide which method you should use for applying products to your hair. Can You Change Your Hair Porosity? Hair porosity is mainly genetic, but your hair porosity can change based on a few things. Things that can change hair porosity: Bleaching Heat damage Harsh products How do you find your hair porosity? I'm glad you asked. I did the water test. A lot of people talk about how the water test doesn't work, and, yada, yada. It worked for me. So this is what you do to do the water test. Steps: Wash your hair (Wash your hair first to remove any product from your hair strands that might be coating your cuticles). Get a cup of warm water. Take a strand of hair and place it in the water. Let it sit for about 5 mins And if it floats, it's low porosity. If it's in the middle, it's medium porosity. And if it sinks, it's high porosity. Low Porosity So you did the water test and your hair floats. What does that mean? This means that your hair is low porosity and that your hair cuticles are tight and very close together. Because your cuticles are tight and close together. That makes it harder for water to get in the hair shaft. It's harder for the hair to retain the moisture that is trying to get in. Signs Your Hair is Low Porosity Products just sit on your hair or on your scalp. For example, Grease does not absorb into your hair or into your scalp, and thicker products weigh your hair down. When you spray water on your hair, the water sits on your hair and looks kind of frosty. When you're washing it, your hair takes a long time to get saturated. Your hair takes a long time to dry. Tips for Managing Low Porosity Hair 1.)Wash your hair with warm water. The warm water will open up your hair. 2.) Use lighter creams and lighter oils. Some lighter oils are jojoba, almond, Sesame, and hempseed. 3.) Stay away from products with protein. Stray away from protein treatments too. Especially DIY protein treatments. 4.) Use the LCO method for applying products to your hair. Liquid-Cream- Oil 5.)Do heated conditioners when you are conditioning your hair. This is the main one. This one literally changed my life. A heated Conditioner is just as simple as it sounds. You can use a heated conditioning cap or you can warm up your conditioner in the microwave. If you choose to use the microwave, warm up the conditioner for 30 sec and apply it to your hair. Allow the conditioner to sit for 20 mins or sit under your heated conditioning cap for 20 mins. Medium Porosity Hair So you did the water test and your hair sinks to the middle and floats. So what does that mean? This means that your hair is medium porosity, and your hair cuticles aren't super close together. Nor are they super far apart. Because your hair cuticles are slightly raised, it's easier for water to get in and out of the shafts. This is why medium porosity is considered one of the easier porosities to maintain. It’s deemed to be super low maintenance. Well, not low maintenance because we all know natural hair isn't low maintenance, but you know what I'm talking about. Signs Your hair is Medium Porosity Your hair can hold styles for a relatively good amount of time. Your hair doesn't look super dry really quick, or it doesn't look like it's super heavy and saturated all the time. Your hair doesn't take long to dry at all. Your hair takes color really well. So say, for instance, you dye your hair. It will be able to maintain the change and stand its ground. Your hair looks shiny or glossy. Tips For Managing Medium Porosity Hair 1.) Use cooler water when styling your hair. The cool water helps close your cuticles back up. Allowing your hair to retain the moisture for longer periods of time. 2.)Try to stay away from protein treatments. If you do too many protein treatments, it can cause your hair to become crunchy and brittle. 3.) Limit the amount of heat that you use on your hair. Using too much heat can cause your hair to transition over into the high porosity side. There are really no tips for styling your medium porosity hair because medium porosity hair isn't very picky. It retains moisture well, and it doesn't dry out fast. So you're good. High Porosity Hair So you did the hair porosity test and your hair sinks. What does that mean? This means your hair is high porosity and your hair cuticles are super raised and super spaced apart. When your hair cuticles are raised and spaced apart in that way, the hair lets in more moisture than it can retain. Signs Your Hair is high Porosity Your air dries super fast. Your hair gets tangled a lot. Your hair breaks rather easily. Your hair is super frizzy and dry all the time. You can actually feel a bumpy feel across your hair strands. Tips For Managing High Porosity Hair 1.) Protein treatments and products with protein. Protein treatments help strengthen your hair cuticles. 2.) Use thicker oils and creams. Thicker oils and creams fill in the gaps along your hair strands. A thicker oil that you can try is castor oil. 3.)Always deep condition your hair. It helps to repair your hair strands. 4.)Avoid using hot water when washing your hair. Hot water opens your cuticles, and they're already open. So try to use Luke warm water or cooler water. 5.) Use the LOC method when applying products. Liquid-Oil- Cream Main Takeaway Learning your hair porosity is what will help your hair flourish. It teaches you how to manage your hair in particular. I am not saying that learning your hair porosity will solve all your issues. I am trying to stress the fact that it's the starting point for having a healthy hair journey. Everyone’s hair is different, so our journeys will be different. But let’s all start at Hair Porosity.
